Description

Didyma - Didim, Temple of Apollo, Turkey. From 4th-2nd century B.C.

I went here before and photographed the temple from the same angle: see [link]

But this time I had a better lens and light conditions.

The temple of Apollon in Didyma is one of the biggest temples that was built in antiquity. It was one of the 3 "dipteros" (having two colonades around the structure) planned temples ever built. Looted by Persians in the unfortunate Ionian rebellian, the cult statue was stolen and taken to persepolis, only to be recovered and send back by Alexander the Great. The construction of this huge new phase of the temple must have started then and continued for hundreds of years into the Roman era, never to be finished.

Other examples of the dipteros plan are the Hera Temple in Samos and Artemis Temple in Ephesus. The latter became one of the wonders of the world. But only the Didyma Temple survives in a visible state today, as the best example of the major architectural undertaking by the classical world.

Very good shot! Which lens did you use?
