Deep in the mid Anatolian highlands, Eskisehir would have been just another unimportant town had it not been for the railway. Built in pre WWI days, this was a major stop on the Berlin-Baghdad railway, the last major enterprize colapsing Ottoman Empire attempted, backed by German financing. Raiway brought over industry. Nowadays with 300 major factories including one in which F-16 fighter jet planes are made; with a active NATO base; 2 universities and a population over 500 thousand, this is one of the important industrial and cultural centres of Turkey.
